The Birthday Boy

Brockville School students —

Hade had a thought.

What if it could be his birthday every day?

To have a birthday every day, he would need to have a party every day.

So Hade made a stack of party invitations. He gave the invitations out at morning tea, and he had a party with all his classmates at lunch time.

It was a great party, but there wasn’t a cake.

So the next morning, Hade opened his piggy bank. He took out all the money, and he bought a cake from the tuck shop.

It was a great cake, but he didn’t have enough money to buy another one for the next day’s party. So that night he used a little bit of science and a little bit of magic to bake his own cake.

Each day he baked bigger, better and more magnificent cakes.

“You’re a regular little pastry chef,” said Dad.

The cakes were wonderful, but something was missing.

Presents.

“Dad, I have a proposition for you,” Hade said. “I’ll do all the housework if you wrap up a present for me every day.”

“All the housework? That’s all the cooking, all the dishes, all the vacuuming, all the laundry, and cleaning the toilet.”

“Deal,” said Hade.

“Deal,” said dad.

The presents were great. The cakes were great. The parties were great.

But something was missing.

Fun.

It was just too much work doing all that baking and all those chores every day. Not to mention making all those invitations.

Hade was too tired to enjoy his own parties.

The next day Hade didn’t have a party.

He didn’t have a party the day after, or the day after that.

He didn’t miss the presents, the chores, or making the invitations.

He did not miss cleaning the toilet.

But he did miss being a pastry chef.

“Hade, it’s Caroline’s birthday tomorrow,” said the teacher. “Would you like to bake her a cake?”

“I’d love to!” said Hade.

He made a castle cake for Caroline’s birthday.

Then he made a unicorn cake for Ursula.

He made a race-car cake for Rewi’s birthday, and a dinosaur cake for Deepika.

Hade was happy.

But one day, he had a thought.

What if it could be Christmas every day?
