Starting Again

December 31, 2184. At the moment the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, an emergency alarm suddenly sounded.

“Abnormal weather event taking place. Abnormal weather event taking place. This is not a drill. Please evacuate to your nearest shelter.”

People drawn out into the street by curiosity suddenly began to collapse one by one as the voice stopped speaking. People fell down dead at the sound of screaming amid this scene, like the song of the sirens in Greek mythology. The residents of the apartment block rallied together to stop the freezing wind from penetrating the window cracks, and made it through the day by using the heat from their bodies to keep each other warm.

Before communication cut out the following day, we learned through the internet that the planet’s climate had suddenly turned so cold it would be difficult for life on Earth to survive. A recent report stated that the earth’s temperature had risen by around four degrees over the past one hundred years, and the concentration of greenhouse gases had set a new record. Global warming had made winters colder and summers hotter. There was nothing left to eat since everyone had rushed outside the day before, so we had to go and find food.

The five healthiest young people, including myself, formed a team and set out to reach the convenience store inside our apartment complex. At that moment, I thought of something my grandfather, a scientist, had always said:

“If the Earth comes under threat, go and retrieve the time capsule.”

We went to Seoul Millennium Time Capsule Square, where my grandfather’s time capsule was stored, and found his remaining possessions. But the moment we opened the box, we were abruptly sucked inside it.

It was January 1, 1984 – around two hundred years before the abnormal weather began. It was there that we formed a climate group to prevent such a tragedy from arising in the future, and worked as hard as we could to finally put the planet back in a healthy state.

In recent times, Do-hun Lee noticed climate change becoming more serious. The weather is changing so much that there are suddenly hot days in winter and cold days in summer, and it feels like the abnormal climate will soon cause a huge catastrophe in the world. He decided to enter this collaborative project led by Dunedin UNESCO Creative City of Literature so that we can all work together to overcome the climate crisis and create a better world.
