Student/Whanau support Social Worker

Lennox Sharp —

How can we help you?

We are fast reaching the business end of the year for students at all levels. The result can be higher stress levels with both students and whanau anxious about the future. East Otago High School has been provided assistance so that we can have someone based within the school to offer support and help to all within the school community. I have been fortunate to have been given this opportunity.

I see the role as wide ranging encompassing much that happens both within and outside of the school. A key focus is to ensure all our students have the opportunity to achieve to the best of their ability. To enable this students need to feel supported both at home and at school and this is an important part in my role. Another key aspect is attendance. Students have a much greater chance of gaining success if their attendance levels are high. A dropping attendance rate is usually a sign that things are not quite right whether it be at school or at home.

Another key aspect of young people’s lives is the internet and social media. The internet provides all with great opportunities. Unfortunately, it also has dangers many of which are not discovered until it is too late. We have arranged a presentation by Netsafe which is New Zealand’s leading independent organisation that has a focus on online safety. This presentation will be held in the Jan Malloch Library, East Otago High School on Tuesday 24th August at 7.00p.m. This meeting is open to all and we encourage you all to attend. We are not immune from the dangers of social media.

As the Student/Whanau support social worker for the East Otago High School community I am available to provide support and guidance to all. Please do not hesitate to contact me through the school office if you have issues or concerns that you think I might be able to help with.
