Marcus Cooper —

On the 2nd of April the East Otago High School Staff participated in a culturally responsive workshop at Puketeraki Marae.

We were formally welcomed at the Marae through a traditional Powhiri. Waiariki Parata-Taiapa welcomed us on to the Marae as the Tangata Whenua with our very own, Johnny Herewini, speaking expertly on behalf of the Manuhiri.  Almost all the educators in the East Otago area from all schools and early education centres were in attendance. The day consisted of  exploring the types of teaching practices that are culturally responsive to this area. We all shared our mihimihi which gave us a chance to make connections with other teachers in the area and strengthen our relationship with the local Runaka. On behalf of the staff I would like to thank the Puketeraki Marae for hosting us. They presented an excellent professional development experience, feed us superbly, and provided us with resources that we can use to strengthen our own teaching back at school.

Next week we have our school interviews on Wednesday the 10th of April. Due to the number of families wanting interviews we have extended the time out to 7pm. We look forward to seeing you all there on Wednesday.

The term is fast coming to an end. Term One is always full of activity and flies by at a great speed of knots. On a personal note I would like to thank everyone who has made my transition into the East Otago community so easy.  This speaks volumes for the people here and the wonderful students and whanau we have. Have a great holiday period, recharge the batteries ready for an action packed Term Two.

Nga mihi nui.
