Get to Go Challenge
Some of you have been wondering what it is all about!
On Wednesday 14th September, 16 students, predominantly from the Year 9 & 10 PE Wild Class, took part in the Torpedo 7 Get to Go Challenge.
This was an adventure style race challenge that involved teamwork, skills and fitness to complete a range of activities. It was the first time EOHS had competed and we entered two teams. The first challenge was orienteering/rogaining. This was based around Forrester Park in Bethunes Gully. The team had to read a map and use a compass to navigate their way around, collecting as many controls/points as possible in one hour. Our practice with map reading, around Palmerston certainly helped us have success in completing this part of the challenge.
The second part of the challenge was a kayaking relay at MacAndrew Bay. Students were paddling a double kayak around a short course before running up the beach and tagging the next two team members. Again it involved working together to get the job done, in particular, supporting each other at the beginning and end of the paddle and holding the kayak for the next pair. This was cold!!!! But the students stuck at it. The paddle got shorter and the run longer as the tide crept out, but everyone kept going hard for the entire hour.
It was then into the vans to warm up and transition to the final stage which was a short mountain bike relay race at the bottom of Signal Hill. Again, students biked as fast as they could, two at a time, clocking up as many laps per team as they could within an hour. It was a great challenging day that fostered teamwork, perseverance and determination. The students had some spills and laughs along the way, and will know doubt remember the day out with their mates!
Our teams did not place in the event, but learnt some new skills and had a taste of adventure racing!
