The Walk To Grave’s Dam

Kirsty McLachlan —

On a hot boiling day when everyone thought they were going to die, we tramped down the dusty old road. Bella tripped over the rock giving her such a fright, meanwhile everyone was laughing at her. We finally got half way to Graves Dam, but to get there we had to walk across the slippery, hard rocks in the river. The river felt just like a million tiny pieces of ice lying on your back. Once everyone crossed the river we carried on strolling down the rocky, old road.

A few minutes later we looked left and we saw beautiful scenery as we were jogging slowly. We saw a lovely waterfall and big boulders. We saw gigantic trees surrounding us. It took us a long forty minute walk. The dam was just around the corner. We all were so excited! Bella and I had never been there before so we saw this for the first time.

We both really loved it. There was a bridge we ran across on and on the opposite side there was another bridge that I thought was really cool. We all had to walk in the muddy slippery footpath to get to the dam. I saw a sign while I was walking: “Historical Graves Dam”. Just by reading that I was thrilled to go there because I really like historical things. As we walked through the mud Jessica got caught in the trees.

Everyone took off their shirts and pants to go swimming in their togs. I slowly, but painfully slipped, down the steep rock. I jumped up on the fine, smooth rocks where it was shallow. I stood there waiting for my turn. Splash!!! Ciara leaped into the water with her legs slowly but surely touching the water. It was finally my turn! I dived in the water realising I just discomforted my knee. My knee started getting red, luckily not the colour of blood.

We tried to swim against the strong rapid, but we were just exhausting ourselves. No one could get past the rapids except for Heath and I. I got sloppy, slimy weed in between my toes. It felt really really gross. I even got the weed on both of my hands. Just between you and me, that was definitely not one of my highlights at Camp Iona.

“ Five minutes!” shouted Ms Mclachlan.

I dunked my head down the water for a couple of seconds before I ran out of breath. I got out of the water struggling to climb the steep rock up!

I got some warm clothes on to keep me from getting cold. As we walked past the sign, I felt my legs wobble a bit. I couldn't walk properly from all that swimming my legs felt weird. We walked to the bridge while the sun was shining in our faces. We were all standing next to the bridge so the adults could take a picture.

The photo was taken, we left Grave’s Dam and walked back to Camp Iona. It was such a long walk in the hot sun. We were three quarters away from camp grounds. Ciara's dad walked with Gracie, Ciara, Caelyn and I. We played all sorts of music, for example the song called “Jumping All Over The World.”

The journey ended but I enjoyed it so much!!!

The End
