Accelerated Learning in Mathematics

Mathematics Department —

We have had nine students in the Year 9 and 10 group working on the Ministry-funded programme called Accelerated Learning in Mathematics (ALiM). Students who are just below their expected level in Math's are given an extra 10 minutes each morning in Rawhiti time to understand the concepts of the lesson, that was being taught that day. Students then understood the questions being asked in class and became much more confident and the majority accelerated their learning. Students are usually given one Term on the programme, but we have kept some students on longer.

We have had great success with four of the students moving ⅔ or a full curriculum level in one Term. Students made comments such as ‘It helped me learn. It showed me what we were going to do before we did it. It helped me do it’ and ‘It helped me get straight onto task at the start of the lesson as I knew what to do’. We are excited to expand the programme into the Years 7 and 8 for next year.
