NEW at Victoria University

Jacqueline Guile —

Bachelor of Global Studies*—New in 2023

Global Studies is an interdisciplinary programme that equips students to seek new solutions to the most pressing problems the world faces from global and local perspectives. As the world continues to become more connected and global solutions are sought for global problems, it needs interculturally confident, civic-minded, global citizens who can bring together knowledge from different fields to lead positive change.

Students will study on the doorstep of international politics, commerce, diplomacy, and culture in Wellington with access to Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s networks and connections to Wellington’s key industries and players, domestically and internationally.

The degree is supported by a professional and industry advisory board, which provides external advice and insights to ensure our graduates are meeting the needs of employers, and tackling the issues that matter locally and globally.

Bachelor of Global Studies students will develop ethical awareness and intercultural, interdisciplinary, leadership, and teamwork skills in the core courses, explore different subjects, and then choose areas to specialise in, known as minors.

Students will create their own unique degree by selecting at least two interdisciplinary minors from the nine we offer:

  • Area and Cultural Studies
  • Climate Change, Environment and Sustainability
  • Cultures and Identities
  • Ethical Leadership and Intercultural Communication
  • Ethics and Inequality
  • Global Health and Wellbeing
  • Globalisation and Change
  • Human Rights, Justice and Peace
  • International Business, World Affairs and Organisations.

First AI major in Aotearoa*

We’re excited to be offering the first undergraduate major in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Aotearoa New Zealand. AI is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines that sense, act, and learn from experience to perform tasks for humans.

The applications for AI are endless. The technology can help solve real-world problems across diverse areas such as climate change, cybersecurity, finance, healthcare, and renewable energy.

The new major can be done as a three-year Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Artificial Intelligence, and can be combined with other relevant disciplines such as biology, health, or the environment. Students can also pair the AI major with a Computer Science major or a Data Science major, giving them strong technical skills in AI that could be applied in a range of application areas.

We have internationally renowned Artificial Intelligence academics who will teach students the techniques and tools to contribute to the development of new AI systems. Read more about the new AI major: www.wgtn.ac.nz/ai

*The Major in Artificial Intelligence will be offered from Trimester 1, 2023, subject to regulatory approval.
