Meals on Wheels

Gillian Whyman —

Wind, rain, hail, as well as changing COVID-19 Alert levels, have not halted the enthusiasm or dedication of senior East Otago High School students involved with delivering Meals on Wheels around the Palmerston community. “I really like the idea of Meals on Wheels and helping out,” commented Josh Walker (Year 11) as he completed another shift. “As well as helping older people in our community, delivering Meals on Wheels helps me to get community service hours. I enjoy it,” stated Lily Blasby (Year 12). Each Thursday, during term time, a pair of students from Years 10-13 collect hot meals from the Waihemo Lodge, then deliver them around Palmerston to appreciative senior citizens. Special thanks to Kate Allan-Chalmers, Lily Blasby, Shaunae Coombes, Kari Croucher, Emilee Hagan, Katie Nimmo, Rafe Johnson and Josh Walker who were happy to continue deliveries during the recent COVID-19 Alert Level 2. Now that the Alert Level has returned to Level 1, a much bigger pool of students is available to support the service throughout the rest of the school year.
