North Zone Athletics

Kate O'Connell —

The North Zone Athletics was held on the 7th of November in good conditions at the Caledonian Ground in Dunedin. We had around twenty Year 7 & 8 students qualify and compete in this event. It was all go with heats for the sprinting events and field events keeping our athletes busy for the morning. For this event, students are only allowed to compete in three events, which is often a challenging decision to make for those that qualify for multiple events.

Neave O'Connell was the only student to progress to a sprint final and she finished 4th. We had a few more students make the hurdles finals, with Neave again having a close battle and just coming 2nd by a nose in the U12s! She will be looking to push for a win at Otago's in a couple of weeks.

Livana Skevington also had a great race and finished 3rd in the over 13 age group.

The over 13 boys was action packed with three of our students battling it out. Jacob Colhoun, Ollie O'Connell and Jay T TeRaki will look to improve when they have another attempt at the Otago finals.

Maddison McAra will also get another crack at hurdles at Otago's. In the field events, Hamish Smith finished 3rd in the High Jump and he will look to jump even higher at Otago finals. Maddie McAra also jumped well for a commendable 4th in the u13 High Jump.

Our shot putters also had some good results with Shayden Brown finishing 3rd and Kane Crowther 5th in their respective age groups. We had some relay teams have some fun and success with the girls pushing hard (mostly out of their age groups) to finish a respectable 3rd in the over 13 age group. (Addison, Maddison, Neave & Livana). The two boys teams also qualified for the next stage. The final event in the heat of the day is always the 800m. Our runners pushed hard in this challenging event, with Logan Te Huia and Ollie O'Connell taking top 5 spots and qualifying for the Otago finals. We wish all the athletes all the best when they head to the Otago Primary Athletics next Tuesday.
