Home Economics Update

Erin Kempthorne —

It’s that time again to give an update of the going’s on in the Home Economics area of East Otago High School. At the beginning of Term Three we had an Open Day where Year 6 and some Year 8 students from our contributing schools came to spend a day and enjoy some of the activities on offer. This year’s theme was ‘Come join the Flock’ and saw a huge thank you to the 2023 helpers and to our visiting students and their staff/whanau who came with them. It was a great day.

In the Year 7 and 8 area we are currently finishing our final module round to complete our 2023 cycle. Recipes cooked this term have included pinwheel scones, fluffy cheese and potato bake and lemon meringue pie to name a few. It has been fantastic to see the confidence build in these junior students and I appreciate the stepping out of comfort zones of many who are trying skills and techniques for the first time. Well done to all who have given it their best.

In the 9 and10 area we have almost made it to the end of our Semester Two program. Our students have been busy this term going from the sweet of Beautiful Biscuits in Term Three to the savoury and sometimes spicy Pizza Perfect in Term Four. Students have looked into the different ingredients and their uses during both of these units and worked out combination of flavours and textures to take their ideas from concept to a product that is complete and ready to market. It has been fantastic to see students learn the process involved taking an a concept from start through to finished product. All in all it has been an enjoyable year in the Home Economics room and I look forward to seeing many of you back in 2024.

Have a great Christmas one and all.
