Kids Voting - Te Pōti a Ngā Tamariki

Kelvin Cummings —

In the lead up to New Zealand's election, the Social Science department have agreed to take part in a nationwide New Zealand school study, giving students an opportunity for the right to vote.

Students from Year 7-13 will all have the chance to vote for not only our local Waitaki and Dunedin MPs but also the party they wish to lead New Zealand after the next election. We will be giving students who identify as Maori the opportunity to cast a Maori vote instead.

Voting rights are normally reserved for people 18 years or older, so this is a great opportunity for all of our students to have a voice in regards to what they feel is important.

In addition to the MP and party votes, students will also have the opportunity to vote on their opinion regarding the current referendums.

1) Do you support the End of Life Choice Act 2019 coming into force?

2) Do you support the proposed Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill?

To find out more information about these important issues, please visit www.referendums.govt.nz.

Voting papers will be handed out at form classes on Thursday 24th September 2020. Once students have made their vote, the voting papers need to go into the voting boxes in their form class. Voting must occur before 3:05pm Friday 25th September 2020.
