Science Fair 2019

Loreen Bethel —

The approach to Science Fair this year was a little different to years gone by. Completing a project this year was made compulsory for all Year 7’s and 8’s as part of our teaching unit. The fair was made voluntary to the rest of the school. Throughout Term two, students worked on their investigations within class-time, with some completing experimental components at home. The Year 7 and 8’s have really grown in their understanding and confidence of Experimental Design and turned out some really well designed projects. 15 projects were selected to go onto the main Aurora Otago Science and Technology Fair on Monday 5th August. All students selected spent the day at the Museum participating in the judging component of the fair, afterwards visiting various exhibitions in the museum. Of our 15 entries, 11 prizes were awarded, some students receiving prizes from more than one category.

The prize winners were

- Yr 7/8 - Neve Curtis, Danika Billington, Ryan Worth and Sam Paton, Lilly Kemp, Ashley Howard, Greta McCaw and Addisyn Lawrence, Ashton Scott.

- Yr 9 - Kate Allan-Chalmers and Mikayla Alter.

Those receiving prizes attended the main prize-giving on Sunday 11th August in front on a packed lecture theatre of about 700 people. All students were duly rewarded with a certificate and a generous amount of cash! Well done to all participants, whether you made the main fair or not. Some students are already scheming for next year’s project!
