Camp Iona River Swimming

Kirsty McLachlan —

Excitement was in the air as we walked down the bumpy, rocky track from Camp Iona. The line was long and I was around the middle so I spent most of the time trying to get to the front. By this time we could already here the river rapids and that made us run. Big rocks got in the road at some points but we still zoomed down there.

A shiver ran down my spine as I stepped into the chilly water. I wandered over to the long line for the jumping rock. The crystal clear water hole was invaded by bubbles as the first person jumped into the water whole. My head freezing cold and water up my nose, I finally broke the surface. I thought that was enough jumping for then, but I was for sure going to go back.

I started to walk over to the rapids. Suddenly a sharp rock jerked into my foot. No blood in sight I kept walking over to the rapids. In the corner of my eye I saw some people lying on some hot rocks on one side of the river, that. Now I wanted to do that. I started to climb up the steep boulders to a flat-ish spot and then lay down. Immediately relaxation came to my back. I didn’t say for long though because, as the breeze got up a little, I got cold.

Rushing rapids with kids swimming up and down them. That looked fun. I started to swim up them, with water spraying in my face. Slowly moving, I made my way to the end. Then Mr Cummings said we could go a little further to the next rock. That one was very easy. Next we could swim to the dead tree. That was a challenge but nothing like the next one…. We had to swim to the second rock and stay in one spot for ten seconds with our hands in the air. It took me a few tries but I made it in the end. After my arms and legs felt like jelly so I went back to the hot rocks to rest for a bit.

Slippery, slimy rocks getting stuck between my toes. As I started to walk back to get out and wrap up in my nice warm towel, the whistle finally blew and it was time for everyone to get out. It took a while for everyone to get out and walk up the track back to camp, but we made it in the end.

Nice hot water sprinkled over my head and body as I stepped into the shower. I wanted to have a nice long one but the line was really long so I couldn’t. In the end swimming was really fun, and I really enjoyed the other swims as well.
