Home Economics Round Up

Erin Kempthorne —

Home Economics very own version of Lois Lane here to report on what has been happening in the best smelling, mouth watering subject area of East Otago High School. Its been a busy year since my last report with two more 7/8 classes coming through the door to do their rotations of the modules. During this 78M participated in our Matariki focus where the students made Parāoa parai (fried bread). This involved students making their own bread dough from scratch and forming bread slice pieces to cook in the fry pan on top of the stovetop. The smell in the room was amazing and the students did a great job.

In the 9/10 area we have been working our way through a Fine Dining unit where students were required to come up with a themed fundraising dinner for a charitable organisation. This involved them designing a menu, place setting and table décor that fitted with their chosen theme and followed a set menu providing 6 courses with 2 options per course for attendees to choose from. From beach parties to hunting and fishing, from Greece to Strawberry Shortcake and all manner of themes in between, each themed dinner promised a dining experience for all attending.

The Year 11 students have earned a break over the upcoming holidays as they have just completed their final internal for the year with their assessed practical taking place on Tuesday. Students produced a completed meal in a one hour time limit and with time to spare. Well done everybody.

Also this term I would like to thank all the students who worked in the Home Ec area on open day. On this day the students worked with the visiting students from our contributing schools to make chocolate coated hokey pokey nuggets in line with our Education is Gold Home Ec theme. All the students and staff taking part had a great time making these delicious treats.

So there you have it. Lots has been going on this year in the Home Ec area and as we draw Term Three to a close I would like to wish all a happy rest of the year and for the years to come.
