At McKerrow’s Pond

Kirsty McLachlan —

On day two of Camp Iona we got ready to go swimming. I went with Jamie and Heath in Lisa’s car to McKerrow’s pond. We went down to the river first. We had a rock skimming contest. Mr Cummings won. My rock skipped five times along the water.

We had to cook for the parents that day. In my cooking group there was Jolene, Daniel, Jamie (but he didn’t really do anything) and me. We had to cook patties and a jam twistie. Jolene did most of the cooking but I buttered the bread and Daniel served. We cooked for Felina. The food tasted fantastic and we got five starts from Felina.

After we had cooked and packed up we went swimming. As I looked to my side I saw rocks flying in the air and I saw people jumping off a big rock into the sparkling water. I jumped off about four or five times . The water was cold but it was fun. It didn’t help that we got given ice blocks after our swim. Liam Thom’s Mum bought them for us because it was her birthday but they made us even colder.

We left the river and went up to McKerrow's pond. I went kayaking first. I had done it before and I was confident. Ms McLachlan wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing so she held me back so I had to paddle harder. I had to keep getting Lucca out of a corner because his yacht kept getting stuck. He would grab on to the back of my kayak and I would have to paddle super hard. While I was in my kayak I watched Yavanah flipped over in her yacht. I laughed. I tried to go to sleep in the kayak but it didn’t really work as it felt weird and I thought I was going to tip over. I went over to Lucas who was in a kayak too and we had a water fight as we flicked water at each other. I joined in a boys versus girls water fight.

Instead of going in a yacht I went in the row boat. I tried to go places but it didn't work because it was confusing. I had to row backwards and one oar went better than another so I pretty much went in circles.

We then went back to camp and we had afternoon tea which was fruit and a piece of baking. We had some free time to play until we were called in for dinner. After tea we got to play spotlight until we got called into the hall where we had a hot chocolate and some more baking before we were to settle into our cabins. Once we went quiet we were allowed to have some lollies and if we stayed quiet we could keep playing.

I thought this day was fantastic, but cold.
