Chainsaw Course

Dr Helen McIntyre —

Agriculture at East Otago High School provides Science and Gateway students great opportunities.

On the 10th and 11th of August, a selection of Year 11 Agricultural and Year 12 students attended a two day course on working with a chainsaw.

The course included Safety working with and around chainsaws. How to maintain the general use of your chainsaw including sharpening chain teeth, adding chain oil and appropriate fuel for the saw. The first day was theory and a small amount of practical breaking down the chainsaw for cleaning and maintenance.

On day two the students went to Mr Walker's farm to cut up logs of willow previously dropped. The students had a great time, cutting rings and really feeling the heat of cutting logs over a 40 minute period at a time. It was perfect weather for a great day out on the farm. The students' feedback was they thoroughly enjoyed the course.

All students completed the assessment successfully and were allocated NCEA level 2 credits.

Thank you to our tutor, Geoff Allinson, and to Mr Walker for providing the logs required for the assessment.
