Engage in Science with University of Otago: 9 July

Dr McIntyre —

As part of the New Zealand International Science Festival and the University of Otago’s Science Expo, created an on-campus experience for students to participate in a one-day programme which introduced them to various Health Science and Science subjects that are available at the University of Otago.

East Otago High School was invited to select 15 Year 9-11 students to attend this event. Students were placed in mixed groups with students from other Dunedin High Schools and participated in different fun and hands on practical activities to stimulate their interest in Science. The students particularly enjoyed the workshops from the Anatomy Department where they used the ultrasound machine to scan their own knees, as well as the hands on activities in Pharmacy where they made pharmacy formulations and in Marine Science activity where they meet some of the amazing local sea creatures found around the Otago shorelines in the mobile touch tank.

The event was based at University College Hostel and the students also enjoyed the hostel lunch and meeting students from other local high schools.
