Library Term One 2025

Rae Howland —

Welcome back everyone to the EOHS school year. I hope that you all had a great holiday and a chance to relax.

The library is open weekdays 8.30am to 3.00pm. Books are issued for three weeks and can be renewed if needed. Five books can be borrowed at a time.

The library is a great place for students to browse for their reading or topic work, read and share time with their friends at intervals and lunchtimes.

We had a great team of student librarians in 2024, and I look forward to building a new 2025 team of interested students, once this term gets underway.

The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any. - Alice Walker

The Hell’s Pizza Wheel - for Year 7 and 8 Students only

The Hell Reading Challenge is a well-established New Zealand Programme set up to support students’ reading-with the bonus of a free 333 pizza.

The students card pizza wheels are held in the library. Students share their recent reading with me, and I stamp their cards. With seven reading stamps, the completed and signed wheel can be taken into one of the two Hell’s pizza venues in Dunedin, and the student can redeem their card for a pizza. This is certainly a motivation for some readers!

I am not a product of my circumstances; I am a product of my decisions.

Issue 1 of the Lucky Book Club is out now. The closing date for school orders is Monday 10th Feb 25. The Book club caters for intermediate readers and young adult readers (check the back pages of the brochure). It has fiction and nonfiction titles. The book club also has a range of fun products…some of them are good for presents! The prices are good.

You can also order through the online “LOOP system” (Linked Online Ordering Platform)

Please see:

scholastic.co.nz/LOOP

or download the LOOP app. Your order will be automatically linked to the rest of the school’s order. You do not need to complete an order form.

On the student order form page of the brochure, there is a How to order online box. This has the QR code to scan to order through LOOP, if you wish.

The Book club also gives back to the school through its scholastic rewards programme. EOHS gets bonus points to enable us to buy more books for the school, so we appreciate your Book Club support.

Building Improvements over the holidays

Doors are being widened (January 2025) and the entry door to the library is wonderfully automatic!!! Not even a button to press! Some painting is happening which smartens up the area, too. It’s looking good.

Rivers of Reading 2025 (ROR 2025)

This is for Years 9-10-11 Readers

This is an opportunity to meet once or twice a term, to share our reading and perhaps motivate each other to broaden our reading into new and different domains.

I will be getting this underway midway in term one for interested students.

Reading Adds Up

A student who reads for 10 minutes every day, typically has a broader range of vocabulary, and an increased level of spelling.

10 minutes a day:

 3650 minutes in one year

25,550 minutes by year 6

600,000 words in one year!
