Nau mai, haere mai, greetings all.

Marcus Cooper —

It is with a heavy heart that I write this report for our community.

The tragedy that occurred on the 15th of March has had a huge affect on all New Zealanders and indeed the world. Our deepest condolences go to the families and friends of the victims as well as the Muslim community. It is hard to believe that in our beautiful, isolated country with such cultural diversity that we would be affected by such an act of terrorism. We have lost our innocence and naivety and know that we too can fall victim to such hatred.

Out of this horrific event we have overwhelmingly come together as a country to  stand up against racism and bigotry of any sort and showed amazing support for the victims, their families and the Muslim community.  I would like to share some word s from Martin Luther King that encapsulates these sentiments.

“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”

Our Prime minister has shown strong and decisive leadership over the last week and her message of not giving notoriety to this 28 year old man from Australia is a good message for all.

On Friday we will be having a Mufti Day "Colour my Day" to show support and raise some money for the families and Muslim communities affected  by this tragic event. Students are encouraged to wear colourful clothing and bring in a donation.

I have included some material that will help you manage your students if they are struggling at this difficult time.

Nga mihi nui
