EOHS Library Term 4 2021

Rae Howland —

Staff and students are enjoying the new, spacious library. This term sees many students in the library working hard towards completeing their course work and studying for exams.

A small team of wonderful student librarians are helping with the library stocktake at intervals and lunchtimes. This is a daunting task and I really value their time and help.

Thinking towards the school summer holidays students are welcome to borrow books from this school library over summer. Students need to see me to arrange this in early December.

The Waikouaiti Library and the Palmerston Library will be organizing holiday reading programmes to support readers with books and activities over the long break so keep an eye out for those.

The Palmerston Local Library is part of the Waitaki Libraries System so if you are in Oamaru you can access more books and material from their library using your Palmerston membership card and return books back to Palmerston if you can’t make it back to Oamaru.

The Waikouaiti Library is a branch of the Dunedin Public Library and likewise you can borrow from any Dunedin library branch using your card.

An online article by Andrew Merle, who writes about good habits for happiness, health, productivity and success described the health benefits of reading. Of note was that reading is a key to success for some of today’s top business men. This echoes Lyn Keen’s wonderful library display advising that “People who read Succeed” which graces our library.

Other positives listed were the following:

Reduction in stress Levels (68%)!!!!!

Preservation of brain health.

Alleviates anxiety and depression

Helps you to fall asleep

Increase of Life expectancy

Boosts happiness and overall life satisfaction.

TheQuote below is from Andrew Merle’s article.

“Reading accomplishes all of this by activating your mind, providing an escape from day to day life, and offering refreshed perspectives for life’s challenges.”
