Science and Technology Road show

by Greta McCaw and Addisyn Lawrence

On Thursday 21st of November, The Science and Technology Roadshow came to East Otago High School. The schools that were involved were Flag Swamp, Macraes and EOHS. Our role as helpers was to stand at certain exhibits and explain what the children have to do. For example the Whispering Dishes. One person had to stand in front of one of the dishes and the other had to stand in front of the other dish. We had to make sure no one was standing in between them. One person was to whisper into the dish while the other person had to put their ear up to the yellow circle and listened to what the other person was saying. At first Flag Swamp and Macraes came in and the hosts did a little show that explained Physics (FORCES). Like what a seatbelt does to prevent the effects of a serious crash. Some examples of the science explained was Physics (FORCES), Chemistry (lots of REACTIONS which were spectacular!) also a rocket was launched with compressed air. Some of the various exhibits were How Old, The Luminescent Wall, The Bed Of Nails, Odours and Kim the Torso. Two of our favourite exhibits were the Luminescent Wall and The Bed Of Nails. The Luminescent Wall was a big Theatre with a glow in the dark wall and you can see your own shadow. The Bed Of Nails was literally a plank of wood with nails hammered into it.
