ROOM 1 & 2 YEAR 5 CAMP

Janine Clague —

Twenty three excited Year 5 students arrived at school on Thursday eager for their camp to begin.  We were looking forward to spending two action packed days at Camp Tirohanga.

On Thursday morning we did river safety with Emma Brown.  We learnt about different river hazards like strainers, rapids and waves.  After the theory session we headed down to Outram Glen, where we walked for 20 minutes along the track to the spot where we practised river crossing and our river survival technique.

Back at camp we warmed up with a milo by the fire and then had time to explore the camp, catch yabbies and play games.  Rain showers meant we spent time inside the hall playing board games.  When it cleared we cooked marshmallows on the bonfire, played spotlight and walked up the track to see the glow worms.

The next day the sun dawned.  We started with a run before breakfast and then it was back to our cabins for packing and cleaning!  Once tidy we travelled to Waihola for yachting and kayaking.

Separated into two groups, we listened to our instructions before heading out on the lake in our yachts and kayaks.  It was a perfect day on the lake.  After morning tea the groups swapped over and an hour later we were on our way back to camp for lunch.

After lunch we had some free time and then we all completed the confidence course.  At 3.15pm we headed home, all ready for an early night!
