WRITING WORKSHOP

Garth Powell —

Last Thursday two groups of children had the privilege of participating in a writing workshop with poet, author and teacher Wendy Clarke. Using our whole school inquiry theme of Our Place in Space they had great fun playing with words and looking at other writers. She gave tips to the tamariki about creating imagery in poetry by using comparative language, personification, perspective and similes. See below for some examples of their amazing work.

In the Eye of a Space Angel Dragon I see;

A racing, flashing satellite,

An annoying asteroid,

Glittering Earth,

A bright ruby red mars,

The point of Mount Everest,

The eighth universe from the sun.

That is what the Eye of a Space Angel Dragon would see.

Poet; Jasmine

In the Eye of a Space Angel Dragon I see;

An annoying astronaut,

Disastrous asteroid fields,

Massive space stations,

A crazy astronaut,

The top of a towering skyscraper,

The point of an erupting volcano.

That is what the Eye of a Space Angel Dragon would see.

Poet; Mitchell

The Dark Nights

Stars float up above my head.

The trees brush against the sky.

Moon beams run through the window.

Trees shoot up into the sky like shooting stars.

The constellations swim through the sky.

I can hear the owls coo in the distance.

The tree dew bounces off the grass like meteors.

Poet; Bella

Moon Sparks

The shooting stars zoom,

Through the moon beams

UFO’s spin,

The red sky looks like wood on fire,

Asteroids come crashing down,

Puddles showing the sparkling moon.

Constellations hang together like silver bats,

The sky is like a black hole,

The moon looks at me like one glowing eye.

Poet; Hugo
