STORY JAR AND WOODEN SPOON CHARACTER COMPETITIONS

Sarah ONeill —

As part of our Book Week Celebrations (1-5th July) we will be running two great competitions that children can choose to enter.

To celebrate our whole school Book Week children we will be holiday a 'Story Jar' Competition and a 'Wooden Spoon Character' competition.  Children can choose to participate in either (or both) of these competitions, if they would like to.

We have models of examples of both of these items on display in our school library.  Please come and check them out if you would like to find out more.

Huge thank you to the fabulous Willow L & Bella C from Tōtara for creating the models for our display.

STORY JARS - (see photos attached)

As part of our Book Week Celebration at the end of Term 2 we have decided to run an exciting 'story jar' competition to showcase our favourite books.

You will each need an empty jar to decorate (the bigger the better), card, wool, paint, glue, felt pens, bits from the garden or recycling bins…

So what is a story-jar? It’s whatever helps you tell the tale. Be Creative!

Sometimes the jar is the right way up,
sometimes the lid is on the bottom.
Sometimes all the bits are in the jar,
sometimes some are stuck to the outside.
Sometimes the jar contains reminders of all the story,
sometimes just one scene.

Children are invited to think about how their favourite storybook could be represented in a jar, for example, by using certain items, quotes or clues about the story.

These will be brought to school IN THE LAST WEEK OF TERM 2

WOODEN SPOON CHARACTERS

  • STEP 1

  • Take a wooden spoon and think about the character from a story you wish to create. Is it a person? Animal? Alien? Get creative!

  • STEP 2

  • Choose a colour to paint your spoon if required and allow to dry.

  • STEP 3

  • Add facial features to the spoon using stickers or wiggle eyes, or by drawing them on with a permanent pen. Allow to dry if needed.

  • STEP 4

  • Add clothing and any other special features to your character using collage materials such as pipe cleaners stems, wool, stick on jewels or felt. Attach with glue and allow to dry.

  • STEP 5

  • Once your character is complete, put your name and Year Level on the back and bring them to the display table in the HUB (the room next to Tōtara & Kawakawa - Rm 7 & 8) in the LAST WEEK OF TERM 2
