SPORTS ACADEMY TRIP TO DIVE OTAGO

Jolene Casey —

The Sports Academy children completed their Discover Scuba and Discover Snorkel Courses on Tuesday.

Last Tuesday saw most of the sports academy children head off to Dive Otago to have a go at scuba diving and snorkeling.  This is always a highlight of the year for some children as they get to wear the full scuba gear and experience scuba diving down to 3 1/2 meters.  They also have  a classroom lesson about snorkeling, scuba diving, safety, hand signals, how to read your gauges, correct use of all the gear, marine life and protecting our marine environments.

Everyone who took part did a fantastic job of getting off the shallow shelf and having a go at deep water scuba.  Most even got to play around at the bottom doing flips, playing paper, scissors, rock underwater and practicing their hand signals and communication underwater.

Many thanks to our parent helpers, who without them and their help, we can not offer these great experiences to the children.
