GIRLS RUGBY AMBASSADOR

Jolene Casey —

Introducing Courtney Smith our Girls Rugby Ambassador.

Congratulations to Courtney S who has been selected as our East Taieri School Girls Rugby Ambassador.  Courtney is in Year 5 and loves all kinds of sports.  She has a dedication to wanting to help out at school and provide some opportunities for other children to take part in girls rugby.

Courtney will organise and run small girls rugby skills sessions, mini games, rugby visitors, take part in all of the girls rugby opportunities and generally lift the profile for girls rugby at East Taieri.  We have a few Year 6 girls who are also passionate about their rugby and will help to support Courtney this year.

It is a new initiative from Otago Rugby Football Union and they wanted to take on board Year 5 or Year 7 or Year 9 girls to ensure they got a couple of years within the school to build their knowledge and continue to support girls in rugby.  The ambassadors have already had their first days training with Otago Rugby Football Union and a couple of the Black Ferns female rugby players.  It is an exciting initiative that will hopefully lift the number of girls participating in rugby and enjoying the sport.

We have a great start with over 25 girls taking part in the Rippa Rugby Tournament on Wednesday.  All of these girls also had a training session with Eilis Doyle the Otago Rugby Girls Development Officer and Otago Spirit player last week.  See some photos from this training on our school website.
