We have had a huge week of sport for children at East Taieri School. We had a number of miniball teams in the top 4 play offs, hockey games, the Otago Netball festival and the Yr 5/6 Rugby League tournament. It has been fabulous to see so many of our keen sports people giving their best and representing our school incredibly well. Please read below for a more in-depth break down of each event.
Touch Rugby registrations are now open. Please scroll to the bottom of this article to find the registration link.
Miniball:
We had 4 miniball teams battling it out in the play offs this week. All teams played extremely well.
On Monday we had the ET Shooters vs St Mary's in the Yr 4 3rd & 4th play off match. It was a close game, both teams scoring some great goals and working hard to get turn over ball. After a tight tussle, East Taieri managed to get a couple of great shots and come away with the win, taking out 3rd place in the competition.
On Tuesday we had ET Jazz playing a very classy Fairfield team in the Yr 5/6 3rd and 4th play off of Section 1. Unfortunately sickness decimated the Jazz team and we were left scrambling to find replacement players so Jazz could field a team. A special thanks to Elzanne H for stepping up and filling in for the boys team! Unfortunately Fairfield were too good on the night and took out 3rd place. Still a great effort to finish 4th!
Also on Tuesday night we had Yr 5/6 ET Slammers playing off for 3rd and 4th in Section 3. A great game and with NO subs, everyone in the team played their hardest to come away with the win and secure 3rd place. An amazing effort!
On Wednesday afternoon we had our Yr 2/3 team playing off for the top spot against Silverstream. A very close game that needed to go into overtime to decide the winner. After an extra 10 minutes of play and some amazing defense, East Taieri came away with the win taking out 1st place!! Well done ET Nuggets!
Otago Netball Festival:
On Thursday we took 30 Yr 5/6 boys and girls into the Edgar Centre for a fun, have a go netball tournament. It was a fantastic day filled with lots of learning, laughter, new positions and some fantastic sportsmanship. There were no results taken as it was all about having a go.. A special well done to the children who have never played netball before, it was fabulous to see you all have so much fun trying out a new sport. A special thank you to our 4 College of Education students, Kendal, Kate, Georgia and Casey who came along and refereed for the teams. You all did a wonderful job!
Dunedin Rugby League Tournament:
On Friday we took 2 mixed Rugby League teams to Bishopscourt to participate in the Dunedin Rugby League tournament. Again we had many children who have never played rugby or rugby league before, but stepped outside their comfort zone to give a new sport a go. Both teams had some great games throughout the day but unfortunately didn't make it out of the pool stages of the tournament. This aside, everyone played incredibly well, all the supporters on the sideline commented on the increased confidence and improvement in both teams as the day went on.
The above articles have highlighted the children's amazing sporting achievements. I would like to say a huge thank you to the behind the scenes helpers! We would not be able to enter all our sports/tournament teams without the help from our parent helpers! Thank you so much for giving up your time to help coach, manage, referee and transport children. Your support is very much appreciated!
Summer sport registrations are going to start coming out from this week! Please keep an eye on the sporting section of the newsletter and the school sports website for all the information you need.
