Monitoring the Health of our Stream with Craig Simpson from Otago Landcare.

Kiwiana Enviroschools meet every Wednesday afternoon during Term 1. We are excited to discover ways to care for our environment including the creek that runs through our school. Last week, Craig Simpson, from Otago Landcare shared some time with us to talk about the health of our stream. He had applied for funding to purchase water testing kits that assess the clarity of the creek water. We are pleased to announce that he successfully received funding and was able to purchase four water testing tubes. We used them for the first time on Wednesday.

We collected water from the creek and used the magnets inside to determine the clarity. At the moment, our creek’s clarity is about 30cm, which is on the boarder between poor and good. We’ll continue to discuss how we can help the health of our stream.
