FANTASTIC REPORT WRITING ON 'THE OCEAN FOOD CHAIN' - FROM KAWAKAWA AND TOTARA (ROOMS 7 & 8)

Jennifer Horgan —

DIVE INTO THE OCEAN FOOD CHAIN

In the ocean there is a food chain and there are four levels of marine animals. In the ocean Level 1 has plants and phytoplankton that use photosynthesis to grow. In Level 2 there are herbivores and omnivores. Herbivores graze on plants and omnivores eat meat and plants. In Level 3 there are carnivores that consume animals instead of plants. In Level 4 there are top predators that are rarely eaten except by humans. We want to protect the marine ecosystem or else we won't have an ocean.

OCEAN FOOD CHAINS

Phytoplankton is the very start of our ocean food chain. The phytoplankton use the sun to grow. This is called photosynthesis. Phytoplankton is a key producer. Phytoplankton are invisible to the human eye. Phytoplankton produces 50% of our oxygen. Level 2 – Herbivoires only eat plants while omnivores eat both plants and meat. They don't use the sun to grow.

OCEAN FOOD CHAIN

The life of the food chain is very important. Every level is connected. There are four levels. The plants get the energy from sun. This is called photosynthesis.

DIVE INTO THE OCEAN FOOD CHAIN

There are four levels in the ocean and all the animals in them are part of the food chain. The plants get energy from the sun. This is called photosynthesis. Almost half of the oxygen comes from the ocean. Herbivore means that you only eat plants. Omnivores eat meat and plants. In Level 2 there are only herbivores and omnivores like seacows, krill and sea turtles.

OCEAN FOOD CHAIN

The ocean levels link to each other. This is called the food chain. The first level of the ocean is plants and phytoplankton. In Level two the herbivores and omnivores graze on plants and phytoplankton. Level three includes small carnivores who eat the level below.
