RIPPA RUGBY and the HIGHLANDERS

Jolene Casey —

What a fantastic opportunity for our Year 6 children to be involved with a Rippa Rugby training session with the Otago Highlanders.

Huge thanks to the Otago Rugby Football Union, Eilis Doyle and some of the Highlanders players who came out to East Taieri School to share their knowledge and help out with some Rippa Rugby skills.  We were also very fortunate to receive a brand new Rippa Rugby Set of belts and tags and a ball.

Some of our Year 6 children wrote a short recount about their experience with the Otago Highlanders last Thursday morning.

On Thursday the 25th of March the year six children were very lucky to have the opportunity to work with our home team, the Highlanders. We got to participate in lots of different games such as

  • Mountains and valleys

  • Cone

  • Rip tag

  • Rippa rugby

Four Highlanders came and their names were, Ash Dixon, Shannon Frizzell, Sione Misiloi and Kayne Hammington. All of the year 6 kids were very grateful that they came and we would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Casey for organizing this for us. We would also like to thank the Highlanders for kindly giving us a rugby ball, a free ticket to the rugby and some new Rippa rugby equipment.

The day was so amazing I loved it so much and I’m sure the others did too.  Thanks again from all the year six children.

Today the Highlanders came to school, Shannon Frizell, Ash Dixon, Kayne Hammington and Sione Misiloi we played games like:

  • Mountains vs lakes

  • Rip rugby

  • Cone

  • Rippa rugby

At the end they kindly gave us a rugby ball and rippa rugby tags to keep in the PE shed. We got to take a big photo and got signatures. After the session I felt very lucky that we had the opportunity to meet the Highlanders as many schools missed out.

On Thursday 25 of March some Highlanders came to work with the year six children because the year fives had been on camp that week.  The year six children did some work in their class until 10:00 when Mrs Casey took all the year six children out to the field where Kayne Hammington, Ash Dixon, Shannon Frizzell, Sione Misiloi, Eilis Doyle and Thomas Grant were waiting for them.  First off Eilis got all the kids to line up. Next she gave them a cone upright was mountains if it was upside down it was valleys.  We played lots of great games with them.
