Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (14 - 20 Mahuru)

Lisa Agnew —

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) has been celebrated in New Zealand since 1975. It acknowledges and celebrates the Māori language as a unique cultural treasure for all New Zealanders.

The use of te reo Māori is becoming more widespread, with people working to ensure the language is rejuvenated and preserved for future generations.

Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori is the theme for this year’s Māori Language Week. ‘Kia Kaha’ is a well known phrase in New Zealand, meaning ‘be strong’.
‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’  - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.

At school we will be celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori by singing waiata together, reading Māori legends and practising our te reo.

At home you could:

  • Improve your pronunciation of Māori words and place names (goo.gl/8RmhQU).
  • Use kia ora, tēnā koe and mōrena as greetings.
  • Find out about local Māori place names.
  • Learn karakia, waiata, e.t.c. this wiki.
