MAORI LANGUAGE WEEK (9-13 SEPTEMBER 2019)

Lisa Agnew —

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) has been celebrated in New Zealand since 1975. It acknowledges and celebrates the Māori language as a unique cultural treasure for all New Zealanders.

Kia Kaha te reo Māori is the theme for this year’s Māori Language Week. ‘Kia Kaha’ is a well known phrase in New Zealand, meaning ‘be strong’. We often talk about language health, strength, and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.

To celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori we will be singing waiata, reading Māori legends and practising our te reo. On Wednesday both of the East Taieri Kapa Haka groups are performing at the annual Otago Polyfest, with the seniors scheduled to perform at approximately 12pm and the junior/middles at 1:15pm.

We would love to have as many of our whanau and friends supporting us at the Polyfest as possible. If you hoping to catch our performances we advise that you arrive at least 20 minutes early to ensure you catch our performance. The cost of entry is $2.

Students performing on Wednesday will be transported to and from the Edgar Centre by bus.

Thank you for your support.
