MĀORI LANGUAGE WEEK 12-18 September 2022

Janine Clague —

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori celebrates Māori culture and language and has been celebrated each year since 1975.

This year is extra special as 14 September marks the 50th anniversary of the Māori Language Petition. This event led to many of the kaupapa we have today, including Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

The Māori Language Moment generally falls on this day to commemorate the time and place the petition was delivered to parliament. This year you can join a live stream event at parliament, commemorating the anniversary and celebrating Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori at midday.

Our East Taieri ākonga (learners) will celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori in a variety of ways: listening to waiata, reading Māori legends and books, practising our te reo, creating Māori-inspired artworks, and much more. We have also signed up to take part in the Māori Language Moment.
