What do the Curriculum Levels mean in the End of Year Achievement Summary?
The New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) is divided into levels, each level takes 2-3 years for children to work through. Children in both Year 1 and Year 2, are expected to be working at Level 1 of the NZC. Children in both Year 3 and Year 4 are expected to be working at Level 2 of the NZC, and children in Year 5 and 6 are expected to be working in Level 3. You can see from the diagram below that each curriculum level spreads across multiple year levels.
Sublevels
We divide each level into 3 sublevels; 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 and 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3.
Your child may be at a different level for different learning areas, for example a Year 5 student may be working at Curriculum Level 3 in Mathematics and Level 1 in Reading. Once your child has gained the skills, knowledge and understanding expected of each stage they will progress to the next level. We update you on these curriculum levels via your child’s school reports and in discussions that you have with class teachers. Rather than being focussed on curriculum levels, we ask you to concentrate on how well your child is progressing from one year to the next.
