SPORTS INFORMATION - WEEK

Rachel Phillips —

What a fabulous week of weather to kick start winter sport. I know our netball teams are looking forward to their first games this weekend!

We had our 7 miniball teams take the court, I have had such positive feedback from coaches saying the children played really well and showed wonderful sportsmanship and teamwork.

Our 3 hockey teams hit the turf this week as well and all had great games. We have lots of new faces trying out hockey for the first time this year. It was fabulous to hear the enjoyment levels from everyone.

Hockey Results, ET Navy Sticks: Tough first outing against St Mary’s Milton with a loss 9-1, a few players down due injuries and illness meant our team played the full 40 mins without subs. Fortunately they’re energetic kids and didn’t let that slow them down. The Navy Sticks worked really hard and showed determination, with a second half goal scored by Lennox in his first Hockey game. Johnson was awarded Player of the Day, also a new Hockey player this season, for his commitment for the full 40 minutes.

Hockey Skills sessions with Otago Hockey: We are extremely lucky to have some coaches from the Otago Hockey Association coming to East Taieri School over the next 3 weeks. Each child will get 3x 30 minute sessions with the specialised coaches. The total cost for this is $3 for all 3 sessions per child and will be added to your school account.

Rugby League: Troy from Otago Rugby League Association is working with us over a 4 week period taking a group of Year 5&6 children and developing their skills and understanding of Rugby League. We started last week in the beautiful sunshine. The children had a great time and learned some new skills and techniques. We can't wait for the next 3 sessions and possibly a tournament next term.

Rippa Rugby Tournament: On Wednesday the 31st of May we will be taking some teams of Yr 3&4 children and Year 5&6 children to the Logan Park artificial turfs for the Otago Rugby Union annual Dunedin schools Rippa Rugby Tournament. Your child was asked in class if they would like to participate in the tournament. An email and google form will be sent on Tuesday afternoon with all the relevant information. If you do not receive an email but your child is keen to join in, please contact me rachelp@east-taieri.school.nz or check out our school website for the link. We can only take a certain amount of teams. You will be contacted early next week if your child has been randomly selected into a team.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our Health and P.E. community consultation. Lots of wonderful ideas and food for thought moving forward with Sports/Health and PE at East Taieri School.
