WALK N WHEEL TO SCHOOL WEEK

Lisa Agnew —

Last week was Walk n Wheel to School Week, an annual event used to ‘kick start’ Active Transport for the school year.

At East Taieri School we try to inspire our students to be fit and active, so it was great to see so many students and their whanau walking, biking and scootering to school.

Teachers survey their classes the Wednesday before Walk n Wheel to School Week, and then each day during Walk n Wheel to School Week, to find out how many students are using active transport to get to school.  On some days classes had close to 100% of their students walking biking or scootering to school.  This was a huge improvement to the week before, when only 31% of students used active transport.

While Walk n Wheel to School week is over, we would love to see students continuing to make the effort to walk, bike or scooter to school.

Reasons to walk or wheel to school

  • To improve health and fitness

  • To learn about road safety

  • To reduce pollution

  • To save money on petrol

  • To have fewer cars and less chaos at the school gate

  • To have fun with friends and make new ones

  • To be fresh and ready for learning at the start of the day
