KIWIANA PROJECT

Jennifer Horgan —

Hello you might be wondering what this is all about, well you're about to find out. In Kiwiana we've been participating in a citizen art/science project called InspirAIRtion which has been organised by Dunedin artists, scientists at Otago University and NIWA.

It is about learning about air and saving this precious resource. We also counted cars on the road and we are a part of an art exhibition in Dunedin with lots of other schools and community groups. Those schools, groups and ours will share their art about air and their learning so those schools can all see each other's work.

This is what's been going on for the past few weeks on a Thursday afternoon. We learnt a lot about the science of air, did projects by ourselves and learnt about the Māori atua/god of the wind, Tāwhirimātia.

The kiwiana whānau group have been looking at air, what we know and what we don't know. Here are some questions that we asked. If we didn’t have air would flying animals still be able to fly? Does air always move? We also looking at the ‘ ‘Moa’s last breath’ this is what we have found out. The moa’s last breath is still roaming the earth today the molecules from the last breath of the moa is still here!

The people involved in this task are: our kind leader Mrs Hall, Christiana, Ryan, Max, Georgia, Olivia, Hannah, Noa, Elzanne, Lucas, Fergus and Vanessa who have all done some amazing work for our InspirAIRtion art project.

Please go along to the Dunedin Community Gallery from September 1st - Saturday 8th October to see the final products.

Also please see the information about a ‘Light as Air’ cake competition that you might wish to enter :-)
