WHY STRUGGLE IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE BRAIN AND OUR LIVES

Garth Powell —

As part of our professional learning of DMIC maths (Developing Mathematical Inquiry Communities) we have been exploring why struggle is an important part of the learning process. A very interesting article we feel that parents may want to read explores why struggle is essential for the brain. It is written by Jo Boaler who is the Nomellini-Olivier Professor of Education at Stanford, co-founder of youcubed.org and author of the new book “Limitless Mind: Learn, Lead & Live without Barriers.”

Below is an excerpt from the article:

"As parents and teachers, we do just about everything we can to make sure that children don’t struggle. It turns out we are making a terrible mistake. Research shows that struggling is absolutely critical to mastery and that the highest achieving people in the world are those who have struggled the most."
