O-TAIKO DRUMMING

Alison Tay —

O-Taiko Japanese Drumming Group comes to East Taieri School.

On Wednesday we were very fortunate to have the O-Taiko Drumming group at school. Taiko drums are from Japan, and this group is based at the University of Otago. The children in the senior syndicate enjoyed their workshops with the drummers, and learned about the traditional way of Japanese speaking and drumming. There were many "Oh wow, that was amazing" comments as the children left the music room after their workshop. The whole school was entertained with a performance by the group. The sound of the drums echoed throughout the school. Vibrations could be felt right through our bodies as the drums were so loud. We were excited that the group played an encore. Henry, the leader of O-Taiko, commented on the children's rhythmic abilities. He was very impressed with our drumming skills! We were very impressed with theirs!
