YEAR 5 RIVER SAFETY

Lisa Agnew —

Last Thursday, 26 November, the Year 5 students took part in a River Safety Day.

In the morning we Emma, Taz, and Jade came to school to talk to us about River Safety and how to look after yourself in the river.  We learned about the different types of obstacles we might find in a river like strainers, eddies, waves, and recirculating waves.  We then learned how to float safely down a river if we get into trouble.  To do this lie down on your back, push your belly up, tuck your chin, toes pointing up to the sky out of the water, looking at your toes so you know where you are going, feet first when floating down the river.

Lunch was sausages in bread.  Yum!

After lunch, we got ready in our togs and wetsuits and then we headed off to Outram Glen.  Then it was time to walk up the track.  This was the worst part because it was so long and so hot.  We were all very sweaty and tired.

When we finally got to our destination we were divided into 5 groups and started our activities.  The activities were how to cross a river, building rivers, how to get out of a strainer, practicing throwing bags to save people in the water, and floating in the river practicing what we had learnt at school.

It was a great day.  Lots of fun.  We rate it 11/10.
