HOME LEARNING WITH ROOM 13

Garth Powell —

Last week in Room 13 we read the book ‘Dawn Parade’ with our parents. We talked about why it is important to remember the soldiers who had fought for our country during the war. We learned that we wear poppies to remember the soldiers that have died. We made some amazing poppy art and wreaths to show our respect. We even had some real war medals for news!

We learned about the bugle and also ANZAC biscuits! Many children in Room 13 had a go at making them over the long weekend😊

We read the book ‘The Little Red Hen’ and asked the question ‘How does yeast make things rise’? We did a ‘live’ experiment with some yeast, sugar, warm water, and a balloon and we discovered that when the yeast muches away on the sugar it produces carbon dioxide and this made our balloon blow up! This same carbon dioxide gets trapped by the stretchy gluten in the bread and makes it rise. Axel didn’t have any yeast so he did an amazing whirlpool experiment!

This week we have been predicting if objects will float or sink and testing out our predictions. We have been talking about secret air pockets in objects like orange skin!

We are going to have a go at designing and making a boat that floats and finding out what designs work the best and why.

In maths we have been looking at fractions and talking about equal shares and the different ways that you can show a fraction of an object.

We have also had a funny pets page and Room 13 certainly has a lot of pets who do funny things!!
