PINK SHIRT DAY -THIS THURSDAY 18 MAY

Jennifer Horgan —

It’s more than a day, it’s a movement. Pink Shirt Day gives everyone an opportunity to speak up, stand together and stop bullying. Everyone deserves to feel safe, supported and respected, whether it’s at school, at work or in their community. Pink Shirt Day is an opportunity to come together to celebrate diversity, and promote kindness and inclusiveness.

East Taieri School is holding our Pink Shirt Day this Thursday 18 May, as we will be at Tirohanga on Friday which is NZ wide Pink Shirt Day.

Could students please wear something pink, or brightly coloured, (if they don't have anything pink!) and bring a gold coin donation.

Bullying in Aotearoa is a real problem. We have the third-highest rate of school bullying out of 36 OECD countries. Those bullied are far more likely to experience mental health issues.Pink Shirt Day works to reduce bullying by celebrating diversity in all its forms and supporting schools, workplaces and communities to be safe, supportive, welcoming and inclusive for everyone. We will be fundraising to support Pink Shirt Day by asking children to bring a gold coin donation on Thursday.

The money raised on Pink Shirt Day is used by the Mental Health Foundation on a number of initiatives designed to eliminate bullying including the creation of a new wellbeing programme for teenagers to be rolled out for free across all secondary schools in Aotearoa.

Funds raised also support the free resources around bullying prevention which are shared with thousands of schools, workplaces and communities throughout the year.
