SCIENCE SHOW OFFS

Lisa Agnew —

Congratulations to Leo and Rosie who won prizes for Science Communication in the Science Show-Offs competition run by the Otago Museum. Leo's video was named 'Power Test' and tried to work out who was more powerful - Leo or his sister Zoey. The result (after a lot of maths) was that they were almost equal. Rosie has written about her experiment below.

As soon as Amadeo left our classroom, I knew I was interested.

Straight away when I got home I began to work on an experiment. I remembered what Amadeo had said about science being in everything around us, so I decided to do an experiment to do with art. I called my experiment ‘Watercolor & salt’. During my video, I created a watercolour painting and sprinkled salt over it, and then explained why the salt gives the painting a speckled effect. After I had finished, I sent through the video and waited for the result. A week felt like months. Finally, the night before the Vogel Street Party, my mum received a call from the Otago Museum. I had won. I was so excited I started jumping up and down. The next day we headed out to the party, and it turns out I was not the only winner; Leo had won too. Science show offs is definitely worth entering, and I think if you try, anyone has a chance.
