Year 6 Tirohanga Day Recounts

Lisa Agnew —

Last Monday, our Year 6 students spent the day at Tirohanga, taking part in team challenges, outdoor activities, and a bush walk. Read their recounts to hear about their experiences.

On the 24th of February 2025, the Year 6s went to Tirohanga

On the way there, everybody was buzzing with excitement to get there. When we arrived, it didn't take long until fresh air swished up my nose, and it felt amazing. We saw Mr. T standing there, ready for a great day to begin.

I was in Group 2. Our first activity was with Mr. T. The first thing we had to do was get our whole team across a beam. It was complicated. We had some great ideas but still didn't make it—but that was okay!

Still with Mr. T, we did high walls, where we had to get over some walls, but the catch was that they got higher and higher each time. We had so much fun doing that because we had to communicate. Mr. T’s station was so much fun!

After we did all the activities, we went on a bush walk. We all thought that it would be just a normal bush walk. Little did we know, Mr. T was planning to take us up the steepest hill we had ever climbed!

We were all complaining to Mr. T—"When can we stop? When can we rest?"—even when there was the tiniest drop, we would all cheer! After we finished the most amazing and hardest walk of our lives, we did bivvy building. My friends and I helped with a bivvy that some others had made. We didn’t do that much, but it still helped.

After we had the most amazing day of our lives, we had to go. Most of us were devastated to leave, but we all knew that next time we come back here, we will be leading the whole school’s Tirohanga day.

We started to walk to the bus, and we were all sharing our favourite parts of Tirohanga day.

We got off the bus and put our bags on the deck, then we sat on the stairs and took a photo. After that, we got into our groups—I was in Group Three.

We were with Mr. T first. We did the walls, and I was helping people get up. The first wall was easy, but the second one was a bit harder.

Then it was morning tea. We had something to eat, and then I asked Mr. T if we could go catch yabbies. Mr. T said we could, but only if he came with us. So we went down and saw about seven, but some could have been the same ones. There were about three massive ones, two medium-sized ones, and one little one.

Next, we did the trust activity—that was really fun, but it didn’t compare to the confidence course! I was at the back of the line, so I had to wait a bit for everyone to go. When it was my turn, I did the whole course in one go. After we finished, we got to do the climbing walls. Zac got almost to the end—he was the closest!

Then we did the bush walk and went back to school.

On Monday, all the Year 6s went to Tirohanga for Year 6 Leadership Day.

First, we got on the bus. I sat next to Jaxon and Cameron. When we arrived, we were put into groups. I had Max, Jasper, and some more people in my group.

First, we did a trust activity with Miss Agnew. It was a trust fall. We had a partner—I had Max. A lot of people didn’t fall that far, but Max and I fell quite far. Luckily, we caught each other.

Next, we did the confidence course. I was fourth in line. I went fast, and when I got to the high part, I used my hat to slide down and went even faster.

After that, we ran to Mr. T. He ran the obstacle course. Max and I pulled people up while Jasper and Beau pushed people up.

Then we did tug-of-war. It was boys vs. girls, and Mr. T was on the girls’ team. We were about to win, but then Mr. T pulled so hard that we went over the line!
