The Year 5's had a blast at Tirohanga Camp. A huge thank you to all the adult helpers who came along!

Camp Fun

Last Thursday and Friday, the Year 5’s went on a funfilled one-night camp to the beautiful Tirohanga. It was packed with activities and learning moments that we'll never forget.

After arriving, we settled into our cozy cabins. Once we were unpacked, we had a river safety theory session. Our instructor, Emma from Wild Earth Adventures, taught us how to stay safe in the water and the importance of knowing the different parts of a river (e.g. rapids, eddies, strainers and heaps more!).

Next, we had lunch and then we headed to Outram Glen to put our new skills into practice. After a long, sweaty walk in our wetsuits we arrived at the river. It was really interesting to see everything we learned come to life. We really enjoyed creating the different parts of a river with rocks. It was nice to see some tamariki overcome their fears and float down the river. We also enjoyed watching everyone try and get over the strainer. Congrats to Isobel for being able to do this all on her own.

After enjoying some delicious sausages for dinner, we went on a short walk to see the glow worms. It was magical watching them twinkle like stars in the darkness. We then gathered around the campfire. Roasting marshmallows was definitely a highlight of the evening, watching them turn golden brown. Yum! Our final activity of the night was spotlight.

On Friday we stayed at Tirohanga and got into three activity groups. The different activities were the confidence course, dayline/bivvy building and trust activities.

Guess what we had for lunch? Delicious fish and chips. Eating in the sun with our friends and whānau made it taste even better! After lunch and a very full puku, we went off for our final activity.

Lastly, we packed up and said our goodbyes to Tirohanga. We all felt grateful for the new skills learnt and the memories we made. Camp was an awesome adventure, and we can't wait for our next one. Bring on Camp Columba!
