Year 7 Camp
Last term, our eager Year 7 students embarked on an adventure to Woodend Christian Camp.
In the lead-up, there was a lot of enthusiasm within the cohort, with students asking a lot of questions and a hint of fear about what lay ahead. When the day came, kids arrived at school early, weighted down by their luggage, sleeping bags, and pillows, and filled with trepidation about what camp would be like.
The Year 7 students arrived at Pegasus beach and embarked on a 5km walk to a playground nearby to the camp. They stopped for lunch and a play before finally walking the last 500m to Woodend Christian Camp. It was here that they found out their cabin bunkmates and chaos ensued while students unpacked their bags, and made their beds.
After unpacking, we began our first two activities, allowing students to choose who they rotated with. This year's camp activities included rock climbing, archery, zip lining, aero jump, air rifles, disc golf, go kart racing, and free time. The students' favourite activities varied, with go-karts, rock climbing, and air guns being clear favourites. The kids enjoyed using the Gaga Ball pit so much that they have requested one at Ellesmere College!
The first night's dinner was butter chicken, which was loved by the majority of kids, including those who complained to teachers about not liking curry beforehand. We organised an evening where students could relax and socialise with their friends. It was a late night for the teachers, with the final student falling asleep at 12:45am!
The next day was full of activity, culminating in some fun on the waterslide as it began to rain. We enjoyed delicious nachos for dinner, followed by a tasty chocolate pudding. The students were beginning to feel tired, nevertheless they were all prepared for our annual quiz night. Students ate popcorn while answering a range of questions to demonstrate their grasp of the world around them.
Camp would not have been possible without the support of some fantastic mothers and amazing Year 12 volunteers. Huge thanks to Bella-Rose Pua, Paige Williams, Mikayla Reid, Ella Knight, Chloe Gollan, Gemma Johnson, Hunter Harrison, Nick Maddren, and Josh West. They exemplified the RISE ideals and provided excellent support to the Year 7 students and teachers.
Overall, camp was a big success. We saw students face their fears, take risks, support, and watch out for one another. The Year 7 team are incredibly proud of our tamariki and are already looking forward to next year's camp.
