Cantamath Competition 2023

On the 23rd of August Sebastian G, Sam R, Hollie S, and Josh B represented Year 10 in the 2023 Cantamath competition.

The Cantamath competition is an inter-school math competition that goes on across all of Canterbury. All schools are welcome to participate and it is available to students in Years 7 - 10.

I will now provide a personal recount of my experience at Cantamath.

We arrived at Wolfbrook Arena at 7:00 P.M. to watch and support our Year 9 group. In the end, the Year 9’s received 55 points out of 100 which was a great effort and placed above many other schools.

By 8:00 the Year 9’s had finished and we headed down to get ready for our team’s competition. Once we were inside and seated they explained the rules to us.

A runner from each team (Josh was the runner for our team) has to run around the arena every time they get an answer checked. If the answer is correct then the runner receives another question and takes it back to their team’s table.

If it is incorrect, the runner has to take the same question back to their team to re-attempt it. There is no limit to how many attempts you can take on a single question but the competition is time-based so if a team takes too long on one question they have the option of skipping it and receiving the next question.

In total there are 20 questions, each question worth 5 points. Our team also got 55 points in the end and we placed above average than other schools. For comparison, the year 10 team with the least points got 25 points, and the top 3 teams got 100, 100, and 95 points.

In the end, we all had lots of fun and it was a great night.
