Highlights from the Arts Department!

On Friday evening we celebrated two of our visual art stars, Trelise Christian and Ina Cahiles, at the Artstart exhibition - a wonderful event that opens doors for young artists, helping to kickstart their art careers.

Their work was selected to be part of the show alongside other top student artists in Canterbury and professional guest artists from across the region. We are so proud of you Trelise and Ina!

If you want to check it out, the exhibition is on until 16th September or visit https://artstart.co.nz/ - you can even give them an extra boost by buying a print of one of their paintings that have been professionally printed by Artstart.

EXHIBITION: 2nd - 16th of September, open daily 10am-6pm with free entry
VENUE: Hereford to High Street Atrium - 248-250 High Street, Christchurch

Also on Friday, Ellesmere College hosted Lincoln and Darfield High School in the annual Selwyn Schools Talent Show. The competition was fierce, with 18 acts competing for the top prize. The audience was dazzled by dance and music, with a huge variety of acts. In the end, third place went to Lucas from Lincoln High School, who played a beautiful piece on the piano. Second place went to the Darfield High School band, MC1R, who’s energetic stage presence will help them go far. First place went to Ellesmere College Year 7 student Amber Phan Hubbard, who dazzled with her skills on the guitar, and was a clear winner.

The final prize was audience choice, which also went to MC1R. The night was a huge success, with credit going to Angelica Laumanu for organising the event, Morgan Pullan for being a great MC, Daniel Stewart for sound and lighting, and a multitude of other helpers on the night. We cannot wait to see what the competition is like next year!

Senior Drama students hit the Theatre!
The Year 11, 12 and 13 Drama class hopped on a bus to the city to see a modern retelling of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. This was thoroughly enjoyed, motorbikes and all and will be reflected on by those who are stilling exams.

Senior Music students had the opportunity to experience a performance from Ara’s Jazz, and Contemporary Music schools last Thursday. We were very grateful for the performance, and the talent that Ara students demonstrated. Our class had a chance to mix with the Ara students, as well as ask questions and discover future pathways at Ara. In total, an hour of music was played, and many students were inspired!
