St. John CPR Training Empowers Year 10 Students

In a world where life can throw unexpected challenges at any moment, being equipped with life-saving skills is invaluable. Year 10 students recently had the opportunity to learn CPR from Shayne Cockburn, a local St. John Ambulance paramedic, and the experience was both educational and empowering.

The training sessions were hands-on and interactive, creating a comfortable and engaging environment for students to learn. They were introduced to the fundamental techniques of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), including chest compressions. One of the most important aspects of this training was the emphasis on a quick and effective response during an emergency, which stressed the importance of early recognition, putting someone into the recovery position, what to expect when calling for help, and initiating CPR promptly.

Feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive. Many found the experience eye-opening and gained a sense of responsibility towards their community. They understood that being trained in CPR meant they were not merely bystanders during an emergency but active participants in saving lives.

The knowledge and skills gained in this CPR training session is sure to stay with the students, potentially making them everyday heroes in the future.

Year 10 Students Dive into Anatomy with Heart and Lung Dissections

In term 4, Year 10 students are on a fascinating journey into the world of anatomy! In the first 2 weeks this has started with hands-on dissection activities focusing on the heart and lungs. The experience was not only educational, but also deeply engaging.

These dissections allowed students to delve into the intricacies of the human body, although we had sheep to thank for the organs in class! They gained a deeper understanding of the heart's chambers, valves, and the intricate network of blood vessels. Exploring the lungs gave them insight into just how complicated and efficient their own respiratory system is and how well it performs its function. The science theory lessons reinforce the science learning and link strongly into the health curriculum too.

Throughout these dissections students were encouraged to ask questions, fostering curiosity and critical thinking that they can take forward into the dissections organised for the next few weeks. Engaging in this work was a memorable and enriching experience for our Year 10 students, and it deepened their appreciation for the wonders of the human body.
